When RB v1.01 is released Scott and I are planning to also release a free version of Run BASIC Personal Server called Run BASIC Personal (notice the missing word Server). It will be made available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
This version will do everything that RBPS does (the complete language will be available), but you won't be able to publish and host applications, and there will be no security login screen. The idea is to let people experiment with Run BASIC and web programming but it will be suitable only for individual use.
We are open to suggestions about this.
Thanks,
-Carl

How would the application run? Doesn't it need to run in a browser? Would it serve to localhost and the browser displays it from there? Or will you have a built in RB browser?

Yes, you would use it the same way it is currently used but there would be no need to log in.
1) Start the console 2) Click the Launch in Browser button 3) Work in the browser

Since there have been many requests for a test version, this would really make it easier to decide, if RB will fulfill the needs. Since it is a free version, there might be some features missing, like between LB and JB. I think SMTP will be one of them, only available for the Server version. Have you already considered what to turn off for the free version

Carl,
I think the free trial is a great idea. You may not remember, but I inquired about that exact thing when RB was first released. It's the same way I had a chance to learn about LB before purchasing a gold license. For the casual passerby, any amount of money may be too much to try something that is unknown.
The language is progressing nicely and just like LB, the community makes it that much stronger. Every question or problem I've had has been answered or resolved by someone on this very forum. Between the opportunity to try the language for free and having the support of this community, that should alleviate any anxiety anyone new user would have to trying it.
Regards,
Psycho

Carl, since you are thinking of a free version of RBP to be published, I would consider changing the default folder names of the installation.
Run BASIC Personal Server, the current product, should create folders and registry entries with the word Server included.
Currently the planned Run BASIC Personal will collide with the start menu folder and the Add Applications entry, because both are named Run BASIC Personal.
It seems easier to me to include the word Server in the payed version, than including the word Free in the version without the server.

It is easier to change the free version. -Carl

The entry for Add/Remove Programs is the registry entry, which I was referring to. I was just thinking it would be consistent to name the child by his whole name, but you are the one to make decisions, I am just making suggestions
