Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the best way to distribute RunBASIC programs? - .bas files
- .txt files (easier to open in a text editor to paste into RunBASIC)
- the programs project directory (just copy it into the RunBASIC projects directory)

Being that RB is for server side applications, the best way to distribute would be giving the server's IP address.

True But I was thinking more of distributing code for other RB users to run on their servers...

OHH, that changes things I would say .txt. If you put txt file on the net, I think most browsers will be able to open them for viewing where sometimes a bas file confuses browsers. Then the user can do what they want. Save or print. Or just put them on the wiki.

Distributing is not the correct word in this case, it is sharing what you are trying to do. And yes, text files are best to share, since bas files are blocked by many e-mail clients, Spam filters and anti virus applications. Placing a text file on the net and downloading it, is considered more secure, than doing the same with bas files.

How do you take care of images that may be used by the program.
I guess you can put the database schema in a text and make the user responsible for creating it. Wouldn't it be better to give the the database already created.
Html setup and user documentation can also be placed in text. And some disk data used can also be placed in text, but for binary stuff it may be difficult.
Some of the supporting files may also be in other directories.
Wouldn't it be easier to place everything in a zip. The unzip would have everything is in the correct format with the correct extensions and in the correct directories.

I'm now thinking of using a windows installer - like the one at www.advancedinstaller.com/ - to package up my applications. The only downside is that the installer is not cross-platform, but since RunBASIC hasn't been released on any other platforms (officially) yet, I'll worry about that later.

Yes, that's right. So far I have got it to kind of work - the installer asks for an installation directory (which is the RunBASIC directory) and then installs the required files in the correct project directories, etc. It's not really a big step up from a simple zip, but in theory you can add additional features (like displaying license agreements, readme files, etc)
The main problem at the moment is that the free version of advanced installer is very limited - I'm also looking at some freeware installers which provide more features.
I also have to test that uninstalling my software does not damage the RunBASIC install.

I guess my question is - Will Run Basic make available some way of distributing programs?
I didn't especially like doing it, but I had to write my own system to distribute some of the stuff I wrote.
I know there is the wiki, but that only lets you post a program list, and a description.

Exactly. I'm talking about open source. It would be great to have a place on Run Basic to distribute code. (give it away if you prefer).
Something similar to freshmeat.net would work.
I was about to submit my stuff there, but thought I'd see if Run Basic had any interest first.
Not a big problem, I can place my stuff on freshmeat.
Have a great day.. Dan

Dan Dan, I did not understand what you meant by distribution. I can create some sort of "web place" to put Run BASIC stuff, but I'll have to think about that. If people start putting their code up on Freshmeat that might even be good for Run BASIC. -Carl
