for some unknown reason, this bit of code refused to work as desired until I included the "a" in the id. No big deal but just one of those little oddities you come across every now and then.
cssid #col1,"{width:8em; background:#ffff9a; text-align:center; margin:0.2em; padding:4px; float:left;}" cssid #col2a,"{width:8em; background:#ffff9a; text-align:center; margin:0.2em; padding:4px; float:left;}" cssid #col3a,"{width:8em; background:#ffff9a; text-align:center; margin:0.2em; padding:4px; float:left;}" cssid #col4,"{width:8em; background:#ffff9a; text-align:center; margin:0.2em; padding:4px; float:left;}" cssid #col5,"{width:8em; background:#ffff9a; text-align:center; margin:0.2em; padding:4px; float:left;}"

mhm, did you have assignes col2 and col3 in another part of the program? or are you using rb tables?

I had nothing else connected to the divisions. I tried it with and without the extra character and it would only work with it.

It seems to work without the 'a' in this very simple example:
cssid #col1,"{width:8em; background:#ffff9a; text-align:center; margin:0.2em; padding:4px; float:left;}" cssid #col2,"{width:8em; background:#ffff9a; text-align:center; margin:0.2em; padding:4px; float:left;}" cssid #col3,"{width:8em; background:#ffff9a; text-align:center; margin:0.2em; padding:4px; float:left;}" cssid #col4,"{width:8em; background:#ffff9a; text-align:center; margin:0.2em; padding:4px; float:left;}" cssid #col5,"{width:8em; background:#ffff9a; text-align:center; margin:0.2em; padding:4px; float:left;}"
div col1 print "One" end div
div col2 print "Two" end div
div col3 print "Three" end div
div col4 print "Four" end div

From what I gather, when this happens, it's time to close out RB entirely and start over. As I did that and the same code worked without the extra character. Apparently, something inside RB "holds" stuff when it should have been erased.

Carl, basically it stemmed from a problem that I didn't notice until well after I made the original post. I noticed later that I had duplicate styles for the same divisions and that is why I needed the extra character. Even after I caught the error, RB treated it as being in use so I just worked around it. Once I closed out the program entirely, the problem went away.
