Alright, I fire up rbp and go to preferences. I see the following under projects root, and public root:
/Users/carlg/vw7.4.1/bin/macx/projects /Users/carlg/vw7.4.1/bin/macx/public
I change them to match my computer and hit apply. Everything works fine. I can see existing projects and save them (permissions are fine). When I look in the prefs.xml file, the entries have been changed.
I shut down and start up again (after a "kill rdp" - is there an easier way?) and the preferences entries point back to carlg again. It's like it is hardwired in the rbd code (and I'm betting it is).

Huh. I don't see that happening here on my Ubuntu 8 setup.
You're starting Run BASIC up with ./rbp rb.im ? ? ?
Those paths are not hard coded. The .im file is built on a Mac and it contains live objects from that environment. When Run BASIC starts up it is supposed to recompute those paths. Perhaps some permissions setting is keeping Run BASIC from retrieving the path or from reading the prefs.xml file? Are you logged in as root?

Yes I started it correctly. I have another installation of Mandriva, and I downloaded the file this morning and ran it, and it works perfectly. The console pops up with buttons at the bottom that ask whether I want to serve, run in browser, etc. That didn't happen on the first install. The only difference between the two installs is:
1. One is a 64 bit vs. 32 bit (the 64 bit worked). 2. One is a gnome session vs. a KDe 3.5 session (Gnome worked).
I guess since you are testing on Ubuntu, you probably wrote it to work with Gnome, so I figure that is the key difference.
Thanks! It's fun!

It should work fine. The trouble is that there are so many Linux distros that they don't all behave quite the same way. I've never even heard of Mandriva before. I'm glad you like it. -Carl

Check out, www.distrowatch.comsome time. Mandriva used to be called Mandrake, it's been around for years and is one of the top ten distros. PcLinuxOS is a fork of Mandrake and Mandrake was a fork of RedHat. There are a bunch of distros. I consider it a strength. Remember, Microsoft is a convicted monopolist that is going unpunished in our corporate controlled country. I'm glad to see you writing for Linux as well as the crooks. I'm waiting for my $10 off coupon, and I'll be supporting Run Basic for that very reason.

Hard to believe this is a distro issue. I have tested RB-linux for ubuntu 7.10, 8.04, 8.10, OpenSuse 11, Puppy linux(latest stable), DSL and prolly some more and i havent ever got any problems you mentioned.
Why you need to kill it specially? For me, it sounds there is some major problems in your system (i guess) since in all distros i have tested, RB turns off nicely when i choose "Exit Run Basic..." from a Run BASIC console. I fire it up and turn it off like a ten times every day and never had problems you mentioned.
This one is second weird part. For me, path was correct without any modifications by default.
What comes for KDE/Gnome issue, thats not the problem. If you need to kill RB application from a terminal, then there is problems either system, or in software that system is running at.
Dont have Mandriva here but ill download it tonight to see if i can repeat your problem and report about them to Carl.

Send me an email to remind me (I'm not at my desk right now). -Carl

Hi folks.
I tested RB with Mandriva Linux One 2009 (KDE and Gnome dekstops) and i wasn't able to repeat problems mentioned in this topic.
Unfortenately i am not linux guru enough to figure out what might cause problems itsthemedication mentioned. Though i would set my stakes for priviliges of files. Specially when itsthemedication tols he/she needs to kill RB, my mind waked that there must be something odd in system, not the software.
Sorry, cant help more with this one.
