Now people will be able to try Run BASIC v1.01 in a free edition that is suitable for personal use. - All language features are included. - There is no login security screen, so this version is not suitable for serving to the Internet. - There is no Publish tab so there is no way to specify a project to host online. The free version is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Here are the download links: Windows www.libertybasic.com/rb101fsetup.exeMac OS X Power PC www.libertybasic.com/rb1fppc.dmgMac OS X Intel x86 www.libertybasic.com/rb1fx86.dmgLinux www.libertybasic.com/rb1f-linux.zipPlease try these out if you can and reply here with your experiences good or bad. Exciting times ahead for Run BASIC! -Carl Gundel

Carl,
Downloaded RB101 and launched the browser from the RB Console. The following error message appeared:
Application Error A fatal error has occurred in this application. Please contact this site's administrator.
Message not understood: #convertGMT:do:
Aside from this error, the console appeared to behave properly.
I am running Win 98

Win98 isn't a supported platform. If I can figure out why it does that I will be happy to fix it, but it'll have to wait. So aside from that you were able to use the other features of the free edition okay? -Carl

Exciting times indeed ;D
The linux version runs fine in Xandros on a eeePC 901. Everything tried up to now works apart from the testFilesStatement demo project which has a windows file path in line one.Changing to a valid linux path works ok.
Will try some of my own code tomorrow.
Mike.

Carl,
Not being able to get past the error prevented me from opening the window to write programs. The tabs all worked fine for the examples and other items.
I have an XP machine at home, so Ill download RB101 again.

I assume you are using the Quick Start and Help for the paid and free version to reduce workload.
The quick start guide includes the screen shots of the paid version, so people might get confused, if they do not see the login screen in the free version. There should be a notice included that the login screen is only displayed for the paid version.
The descriptions of the preferences should include a note, if valid for the paid version only too.
This way people can determine from the QSG, what they will get if buying the Server version.

Carl,
This morning I could not start up linux rbpfree . The process showed up in Task Manager but there was no RB Console window. Tried killing the process and restarting several times without success. Then I discovered that rbpfree will only show its console if there is an active internet connection. Yesterday I had an active connection all day and had no problem with rbpfree.
linux xandros/firefox 2/eeePC 901
HTH,
Mike.

There is a note in there to skip the login screen. I want people to get a sense that the paid version has a security screen, and I want them to see the Publish tab screenshot too.

I wonder if there is some way to configure Linux so that it doesn't do that. Actually I wonder if it isn't an Internet connection that it needs, but *any* network connection (ie. a LAN connection). -Carl

Another discovery is that the RB console shows if there is no network connection but the wireless adapter is disabled. At least i have a workaround. Anyone else seeing the same problem? Mike.

Old thread, but anyways. My complaint is that the free version is too stripped down. This means I can't grab the free version and build a fully laid out and designed sample/test app. If the only limitation was that it couldn't serve up websites to the 'net, I'd be giving it a proper test to see if it fits my needs, but as it stands I can't do that, and I'm not going to purchase a program for $60 just to try it out.
Give me a fully functional version (Minus content delivery outside of localhost) to work with and really start drooling over, and it'd be easier to make me spend money.
$.02 from a web developer.

You can always run your code in a full window, which is not any different from being accessed by an URL.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean (Or how it relates to my complaint).
My complaint is that the free version is stripped of functionality other then not being able to deliver content outside of localhost.
If I could give it a proper try I might purchase the full version, but without being able to properly test it out and see how it compares to other web development tools and methodologies I use, I can't make a decent evaluation of RB.
One of the tests I started doing, was converting an existing website to RB. Took me a good half hour before I realized that the free version doesn't support more then a few CSS functions, making it impossible to create a decent layout/mimick an existing layout.

The only difference is to be able to publish a web page.
You might have been hit by the default settings of RB.
Starting your code with html "</div>" should get rid of the CSS limitations.
Enable Run full screen from above the code editor area for testing in the same way as it would be displayed when published.
