I think it's better to plan for the future, than to regret the past. So here's what's cooking.....
The current setup for runbasicnet.com is short on capacity. There's not enough room and RAM to support enough accounts to keep the lights on. Running a separate RB server for each account gobbles up resources in a hurry.
So I'm shopping around for a better deal. Right now, I've found one that makes the project financially feasible, as long as I don't mind getting my hands dirty messing around with Windows server internals and remote desktop command-line administration. I don't mind. Besides the manuals from Amazon should be here any day now, and none of them are over 1400 pages long, so it's just a matter of reading some text and following instructions, right?
When it comes time to move, all you should have to do is upload your applications code and files like you've done so far. The rest should be behind-the-scenes "transparent" (done by the gnomes and elves under contract to runbasicnet.com).
We're also working on some way of piggy-backing or sharing accounts on a single RB server, to gain some real leverage. It would work something like Carl and Scott's RunBASIC.com site, with a separate login for each programmer, with a separate sandbox for each account, all running from a single RB server. You would be able to upload source code to your sandbox, and have it be Published and run from there. Just uploading -- no online programming or editing. Think in terms of a directory of runnable RB apps, like a wiki with executables, and you'll get the idea.
We're pushing the envelope. Stay tuned, and I'll keep you updated on how the pushing is going!
