Your program encounters a "wait" statement before the "return" statement. You cannot stop program flow inside of a gosub/return block of code, so the parser "sees" the "wait" as the end of the code block.

Once your program hits a wait the program will stop running. You will no longer be in the subroutine.
Try this:
gosub [a] wait [a] print "in a" link #l,"go to",[g] return [g] print "in g" return -Carl
