Mike: I've been doing that for a while, and no problems arose.
When I'm testing servers, I usually try to access them first via localhost, then by the internal IP, then by the external IP. If localhost fails, the server isn't running properly; if the internal IP doesn't work, it's your firewall (or a bad internal network config); if the external IP fails, then your router isn't configured properly (or isn't connected to the internet).
Try running a check like that, and you should be able to find the problem easier.

Thanks Bill, I can access the RB server and run apps from localhost and from an internal IP but not via the internet. My router is connected to the internet - I can browse - I have port forwarding set to port 8008 and local IP address to that of the PC on which RB is running. The latter is the bit I am unsure about but seems right from info found on Port Forwarding website. I just cannot connect to the RB server via my external (WAN) IP address. I shall give up for today, I have a headache! Mike.

You need to use the external IP address assigned to the rooter by the ISP to connect through the internet.

Thanks Stefan, Unless I misunderstand you, I am using the external IP address to connect, but I can't get through the router or are you saying that the port forwarding address should be the external address? The router setting asks for a local address for port forwarding. The url I am using is: xx.xx.xx.xx:8008/seaside/go/runbasicpersonal?app=myFirstApp where xx.xx.xx.xx is the external address allocated by the ISP The problem obviously lies in the router setup but I'm stumped for now.

Is there a manual for the router available online This could help us to help you

Thanks again Stefan, Here's a link to the port forwarding setup: portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Huawei/SmartAX-MT882v2/default.htmwhich I've followed. This modem/router uses NAT (network address translation) and I have found suggestions that you can't access a port via an external address from another internal address. So I will now have to try and access RB server externally and see where I go from here. I suspect the quote may be correct because after leaving RB server running for a while I noticed what may be 'port probes' in the traffic log, coming from various IP addresses. Mike. Edit: here's another quote I just found.

It's strange, I've got my computer port forwarded, and it works perfect here, even using my external IP or URL. Although I have a 2Wire system. I've currently got my computer in DMZPlus mode; which means all ports are automatically forwarded to this computer and I think it gets it's own IP address, too. It's less secure, but it's easier than trying to forward the ports for all the programs that access the internet, such as Run BASIC, my Counter-Strike Source server, any type of server really. And things like iTunes.
If you'd like I could help you test your connection.

Thanks Chris,
I would not consider using DMZ but my current configuration does seem to be working (judging by the RBserver traffic record - lots of port probes from China!) but evidence suggests that I can't test from an internal IP and I will live with it if that is the case, I can access the server from another networked PC. I have arranged to do some testing with a friend later today so hopefully will have an answer soon.
Mike.

Normally I wouldn't use it either, but like I said, I have so many server-type programs that all need different ports, and it became a hassle to set a rule for each one.

Finally proved RBserver is working on-line! ;D Apart from using DMZ or changing my router, it seems I will not be able to test externally, but testing from another internal IP will be just as good. Now to progress with building an RB application.... Thanks for all your help, Mike.

Yes Carl, I published the gas conversion program and got a friend to access and test it. I can relax now! Mike.

Different version, same problem. I logged in and changed the port from 8008 to 80. I could not then get past the 404 message and so tried to change back to 8008. No luck. Reinstalled the program. Even erased the download file and downloaded again. Reinstalled. Still locked onto Port 80 and 404 messages. I read the entire discussion, but everything that was mentioned, I tried.

Hi, You are clicking on the Launch in Browser button? It is possible that Windows Firewall is blocking the port. Go to the Control Panel and open Windows Firewall. Then look at the Exceptions tab. You may need to add rbp.exe to the list. -Carl

Carl
Yes I am clicking Launch in Browser -- I get the 404 when I do that. And yes, I have already added rpb to the firewall exception list -- that was required when I first launched the browser. What I find particularly puzzling is that I cannot get back to the original configuration even by erasing all my rbp files and redownloading. Where is this port number stored? Can I get at it?
