Hi everyone,
I have just installed a version of linux on my computer and am having some trouble, I downloaded and extracted the linux version fine. I read the readme file about how to use and followed the instructions. I used the terminal to get the files and did this:
./rbp rb.im which started runbasic I then closed it and wanted to load it up again later on and It wouldn't work my terminal seems to freeze when I use:
./rbp rb.im It also says in the readme file
As far as I know I have no other programs open.
I am new to Linux so please explain in detail if you can help me.
Thanks.

Where did you extract the ZIP into?
Which Linux distribution do you use?
Which terminal (shell) do you use?

user/home/Downloads/rb101free/
The linux distribution is Jolicloud.
Not sure what terminal it uses or how to find out. Sorry if I can't give you the information you need it's only my second day of using linux.
Kirk.

If I remember correctly you can find the terminal emulator by executing the set command and check the shell and terminal variables.
Its been a while since I worked on a UNIX system and I do not have a Linux distribution installed currently.

kirkaff I too had trouble initially setting up on linux, I use PCLINUXOS. seems Jolicloud is based on Ubuntu www.webupd8.org/2010/08/jolicloud-10-review-ubuntu-based.htmlIn the link above it tells you how to get to a terminal usually the name of the terminal is at the top of screen when you start it the benefit of starting from a terminal is you get to see any error messages when the app fails to execute the problem you are having may come down to permissions so read this www.websitebabble.com/uploading-files-ftp/1667-what-chmod-777-a.htmlso start your terminal "CD" to your folder not sure if SUDO is what is used in Ubuntu to become root in pclosox I use SU then enter password for root I would navigate to the rpc101free folder then type the following chmod 777 rb.im (press enter) chmod 777 rbp (press enter) user/home/Downloads/rb101free/rbp rb.im (press enter) (I do find it odd that your home folder is in the user folder. my machine is /home/laurie/rb101/rbp rb.im) runbasic should start click on button "Launch in Browser" regards Laurie

I run RB happily on Ubuntu. The suggestions already given sound sensible. Have you got something like Skype running on the port?

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your time with my issue.
As I mentioned in my first post I actually got RunBASIC to work the first time. Then once i closed RunBASIC and restarted the computer then tried again it just locks my terminal up.
However this maybe something I did. After I started RunBASIC for the first time I then used cd .. to go back directories and left the root folder. I then used su -i root (I think) which opened the password for root, typed my passwork and got invalid. I looked at Joliclouds forums and apprently we have no access to root on it.
Looks like this linux distrobution is more trouble than it's worth. (or it could be something I'm doing wrong) But I think I will have to go back to windows.
Thanks for your help everyone.

I would navigate to the rpc101free folder then type the following chmod 777 rb.im (press enter) chmod 777 rbp (press enter) I'm having trouble with my Ubuntu install. First of all, why would you need write access to those two files? Wouldn't they just need to be read only? My problem seems to be that the program will not write to the database. It appears to create the database initially when I run it (ala runForum), and it will save the initial site info (again in the spirit of runForum). For some reason it will not save anything else to the database after that. Works fine on my Mac, so I'm guessing it's some permissions issue on the Ubuntu box.

G'day mistic you are most likely correct. unfortunately I have given advice based upon my limited knowledge of linux, even though its all I use these days. chmod 777 may not be safe www.zzee.com/solutions/unix-permissions.shtmlall I know is it worked for me when I had a similar problem I then used CHMOD 775 -R rb101 for the whole directory cheers Laurie

I have created an announcement called Personal Server Other Then For Windows?, which is at the top of each board. This includes the order links for Mac and Linux.
