I installed RB free edition and get an error message saying that the browser can't connect to localhost:8008. If I try http://localhost, I get the default page. Tried in Firefox and Chrome and neither gets me to the RB app in the browser. Any ideas?

The free edition does not include the server feature, it does only run inside the browser.
To be able to publish an application, you need to buy the personal version.

Therein lies the problem... it doesn't run inside the browser, whether the server is running or not. It doesn't matter whether the firewall is disabled or not. It just plain doesn't run at this point. I'd gladly pay the cost for the full version if it worked for me and filled the requirements I'm looking for. Any ideas?!

Sounds like your firewall is blocking port 8008. Go to your control panel and open the Windows Firewall. Then click Allow a program through Windows Firewall. Then click Add port... and add port 8008. -Carl

As stated previously, it doesn't matter whether the firewall is completely disabled or not. If it's completely disabled, then there should be no port issues regarding a firewall, right? However, I did as suggested by adding port 8008 to firewall permissions and still same error. Completely disabled firewall, same results. I launch RB from the RB console, which launches Firefox. I know RB is running because it shows up in the Task Manager. Any ideas?!

I think IIS takes full control over all the traffic and you will have to configure IIS to pass port 8008 trough.
I do know nothing about IIS, so you will have to consult the IIS help file.

this might sound crazy, but can't you turn off the IIS7 or uninstall it? I know I can on my Windows 2000, Vista should not be too much different to turn it off.

Sure, you can remove it.
In fact it must be installed manually, since it is not installed by default, so I assume tabartow needs it for something else.

Actually, I don't need IIS for any other purpose, just one of the things I installed to try to get RB to work on my Vista box. It doesn't matter if IIS is running or not, whether the firewall is on or off - RB still doesn't work. However, I did notice that when I start up the RB console, if I click on the RB menu, the "Server" options in the drop down list (I.e. "Start Serving" and "Stop Serving") are both grayed out & non-functional, regardless of anything else I do (i.e. click on the (launch in Browser) button, which opens Firefox and takes me to the error message (see above). The other two menu items (i.e. File and Help) drop down options are not grayed out and work as expected. Is the "Server" menu option disabled in the free version or should it work in some way? Also, when running RB in the browser if there is no server running, then why does the RB link try to open on the localhost if there is no need for a server to be running? If the url includes "localhost:8008" and there's no server running, I wouldn't think it would ever be possible to run RB through any browser. What am I missing? Appreciate your thoughts.

As you can see from my signature, I am running the free and the personal version under Vista too.
As I have mentioned before the server is disabled for the free version, so you can not publish projects to be accessed from the net.
If you push the Launch in Browser button, your default browser will open with the RB IDE.
Where did you install RB into?
I have mine installed into C:\Shoptalk Systems\Run BASIC Free Edition 1.01 and not into the Program Files folder, since RB does not play well with the security restrictions of that folder.
Instead of launching from the console, open IE and go to http://localhost:8008/, just to see, if an add-on or extension is giving you trouble with FF.
