It seems like RB 1.01 keeps my project file open after it's loaded and viewed in my web browser as a running application. Once I view it in my browser I can not open the file and edit it in an offline editor while RB is running. I get a protection violation from my offline editor. If I close RB 1.01 and try to edit and save the same project file, it saves fine. I installed RB 1.0 and did not have this same issue. I was able to view the running project in a browser and also edit it and save it from my offline editor. Is there something that has changed in RB1.01? or is there a way for me to make sure it does not keep the file open?

Hi, I'm not missing in action. However, I do not see this behavior of locking the file. Does anyone else see this? -Carl

Hi Carl,
Ok, publish a project and then go to the address in your web browser. Use 1.01 for this test. Then use a plain old text editor and locate your project bas file and open it up. Make a small change and then try to save it. You should get a failure message that it can't be saved.
If you (or I i should say) try to do this with RB 1.0 I can open edit and save the file. I will try it on a different computer to confirm I don't have any special rules setup on my windows machine, but I'm pretty sure if anyone else tries it they will get the same result.
I'd like to find out either way.

I can not duplicate this with a program, which has executed a WAIT command. Can you post the smallest program to duplicate this problem. I have checked saving with notepad and notepad++ and none fails to save. Please correct the following steps to reproduce: - publish a project
- open the published application in the browser, so it gets executed
- open the BAS file of the currently executing application in an external editor
- change the BAS and save the changes with the external editor
Please submit code and a detailed list of steps to reproduce this problem in the future. Make sure to reproduce this at will each time you go through the steps.

Hello,
I've uploaded my editor that I'm using/developing to my home page. If anyone would like to download it and use it to edit a Run BASIC file please do and let me know if you get a save error. I would appreciate knowing this. Thanks.

Hi I have found RB server does indeed seem to lock files as benjamin1 has stated...
I have several programs running in RB one of which is a webhelpdesk I created just for our internal IT department to log faults / update notes etc,etc and eventually to close faults.
this app uses a mix of random access files and some normal sequential files all using the open / close etc,etc statements within RB all works fine other than just as benjamin1 has stated if I try to edit one of the files even with no one using the app the file wont save and complains its in use... sometimes if you click save again or save as and give it the original file name it then works...
it seems RB somehow caches the file for a while??? and locks it open even though it isn't. I alway open the files, get what I need and then close the file, to ensure nothing is open and help keep the application running smoothly.
The above problem presents an issue when my schedule backup job tries to zip the complete contents of the d:\rbp101 folder and sub folders in a zip file which is then copied to windows server to be included in its tape backup.
from my experience, there is a time delay, before the file is released... I have no idea how long that is... or wether it depends on the size of the file.... but as there's a few hours gap between apps not being used and the backup kicking off (the zip file then copied to windows server) is about 4 hours seems to work..
my next option which I have looked at is using 'AlwaysUp' which coneverts exe's like RBserver into a service to allow stop / start functionality.
hope this helps.

stormforce5That is some good info and shows I'm not crazy. From what you explained it seems that maybe lowering the Session timeout limit to make the program end sooner might help. I'll play with this and see what I come up with. Like I said before this does not happen with RB 1.0 , so for now I am sticking with that version. Ben
