I am really curious to see that 0.075 subscriber. Or is that one subscriber using the service 0.075% of the time?

I'm STILL struggling with this Amazon EC2 installation business. Download command line tools, tinker with setting PATH to Java bin files (you have to use quotes in setting the path, because of Windows famous embedded space in "Program Files" directory name, but no one warns you about that), download PuTTY for some reason, set private and X.509 certificate keys (whatever the h*** those are).... This is like having to compile C to compile Bison to compile C++ to compile FTP to download the source for compiling C....

Private keys and certificates done and downloaded, and the instructions say "Now you're ready to generate your first AMI", and shows a commandline reading "prompt> ....". Don't got. Oh, you wanted me to access my Amazon EC2 account somehow and be playing with a terminal? How about TELLING ME HOW TO DO THAT! Oh, bottom of page, "If you're using PuTTY on Windows".... Hello, that's me! Follow the link.... " PuTTY does not natively support the private key format generated by Amazon EC2. Fortunately PuTTY has a tool called PuTTYgen which can convert keys to its internal format. You should have generated a private key as described in Chapter 5, Running an Instance and saved the key to a file named something like id_rsa-gsg-keypair. Launch PuTTYgen and load id_rsa-gsg-keypair. PuTTYgen should pop up the following message. " I should have generated.... Morons.... This is like the MASH episode where Hawkeye is reading bomb-defusing instructions to his buddy on the other side of the berm -- "Now find and cut the red wire.... But first,...." Too late....

Let's see.... We'll pretend they meant "c:\>", and try the command.... Yup, accessing internet, firewall stopping it, I let it through, and.... "Client.AuthFailure: AWS was not able to validate the provided access credentials" Perfect. Back to Square One.... I love this business....

"Cut the red wire. But first...."
Uh-oh. 9th and 10th sentences of the "Getting Started Guide" read,
" While instances are running, you are billed for the computing and network resources that they consume. Note: Currently, only systems based on the Linux 2.6 kernel are explicitly supported."
"Systems"? You mean, the whatchamacallit I'm supposed to be building and uploading and installing? Like, maybe, rbp.exe? Oh. Okay. Well, that's only two-and-half-days chewed up....
So, who's got a Windows box on DSL that can be used as a dedicated server? Wait, I'll give one of my brothers a call....

Hey Jerry? I have a solution for you! I recently purchased a server and eventually plan on having my other sites on it. If you would like to help me install RB on the linux system, I'll give you FREE space. If that's a no, check out www.server4you.com they have all kinds of server deals I'm sure you could afford.

Thanks, Rich, that's an attractive offer. However, I'm currently running runbasicnet.com on a Windows dedicated server, and have my hands full trying to keep that setup understood. Please document your Linux setup adventures assiduously and artfully, as I am sure your experience will be valuable to others, including me, in the future.
